How do I get rid of this metallic taste in my mouth?

I brush my teeth twice a day as recomended. Once when i wake up and once before bed. But a disgusting taste tends to be on my tongue when i wake and after a meal. Its the same horrid taste. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I don't mind the taste since i am a smoker, but my girlfriend complains ever time we start messing around. i chew gum, use altoids, use mouthwash, brush my teeth, and she says she can still taste it and "it's icky" any other solutions?
