How do I stop smut mail?

get all kind of unwanted of nasty mail can it be stopped

I have been receiving smut , x-rated garbage in my mail box. I never signed into any of those web sites, so how do I stop this trash? Most of my yahoo mail is Catholic web sites, Jewish information etc. until I started getting this crap.
