How do SkyMiles work?

I applied for a free Delta SkyMiles card a few months back and have taken 2 trips. My monthly statement now says I have just over a 5,000 mileage balance. How do I redeem my miles and does this actually mean I can travel 5,000 miles without any charge...

If I have 10,000 Delta Sky Miles do I really get to fly 10,000 miles or does this convert to some dollar equivalent? If so what is the exchange rate ie how many miles = how many dollars?

I have roughly 30,000 miles available to me. Eaxctly what does that mean in flight time? Basically, how does one go about redeaming points?
