How does the Wi-Fi on the iPod touch work?

hi, im getting an ipod touch as a gift from a friend i just have question about the wifi... how does it work? as in do i have to have wifi... i have internet at home and computer so i dont need it at home but if i was out walking to work or school would...

On the settings it says 'no wifi'.I bought this ipod knowing that the wifi doesn't work.We don't have wifi at our house anyways so doesn't really matter,but it would be cool if i could get the wifi working. Thank you
