How do I get a job on the railroad?

I've loved trains ever since I was a little kid. My dream career is to be a locomotive engineer or conductor. I would love to pursue this dream, but the problem is don't know where to begin. I've looked up various schools for railroad training (NARS, Modoc, etc.), but they're expensive and I've heard very mixed reviews.
