How come HD DVD has a comined format with DVD, but Blu-ray doesn't?

I have a blu-ray player but want to be able to play my dvds other places than my living room so I debated getting a blu-ray disc or a regular DVD. The movie came in blu-ray disc or HD DVD format with a regular DVD on the flip side of the disc (combined format). How come Blu-ray doesn't come like that if they are competeing formats?
