How much does it cost to text to the UK from France?

My friend and I both go to France with our phones with UK sim cards in. While we are there we need to text each other, how much will it cost?

I sent my friend a text from the UK and he text back saying he's in France. Did it cost me extra to send/recieve any of these texts?

I'm from the UK, using a contract O2 mobile phone. I need to text a country in the EU (Latvia). Does this cost extra? Or will it come out of my text allowance? Thanks :)
