How to setup an email account?

I've setup my Yahoo! email account in Thunderbird 3 & am able to send out emails from that account, but I cannot log in to my account to read incoming emails. I've tried reading all the info on line, but it appears they don't actually work. Any help...

I just want to be sure that if I delete their old account that their old email from that account will not disappear. This has happened to me before. They have their email sorted out into created folders. Thanks!
