Can you use paper towels or magazine paper for paper mache? Which is better?

I have a ball to paper mache. The circumference is 42 inches. I have NO newspaper unfortunately and my neighbors do not either. I'm babysitting so I can't go anywhere. What I DO have though is a CRAP load of magazines lol and a few rolls of paper towels. Which one would be better to use and how should I use it?? I need to do at least six layers. Six to nine layers. It needs to be as smooth as possible as well. It's going to be a deadmau5 head. Thanks!!
