What fabrics to use for fabric painting?

I have never used fabric paint but would like to start doing some designs on converse shoes... I only have experience with ordinary paint like arcylic, watercolours, oil etc I did A level art) So what do i need to know about painting with fabrics for...

Redundant I know, but is there a specific type of velvet fabric, or a specific weight, pile, or thread count, to use for painting on?
