What is the difference between modern, traditional and contemporary?

My supervisor suggest a research title 'The Representation of (whatever) in Modern and Contemporary Literature'... but don't modern and contemporary mean pretty much the same thing??! Or at least close enough that you wouldn't write both? I'm confused...

Are there actually classes called modern contemporary, or do they just come in separate dance classes? Which one is better and more fun? I started getting into it because of SYTYCD!, so just suggest which ever dance is closest to the routines they usually...

Ive been dancing for 12 years mostly in ballet lyrical and jazz but i want to do a contemporary solo. I wasn't sure if this was the best route to take considering i'm not sure if a 'modern' dance would be better for me?

I don't live in a very populated area but I watch SYTYCD and reall y love contemporary. But i can't find a place a round here that teaches that. I saw a class for modern is that just another word for it?
