What's the best bike for the trails?

i have a shitty bike from sports chek and it was like $145. my b-day's coming up and i want a new bike that i can do jumps and ride the dirt with out it breaking. im on a budget but i will probably get $300 - $400 for my b-day. so what do you suggest...

Ive got a Trek 7.2 (at least thats whats on the top bar). The tires seem to be able to handle a variety of trail; theyre about an inch and a half across with small nubs. My commute is 9 miles each way, with most of it on bike trails or sidestreets.
