Why can't the pictures from my 360 show up as my avatar?

I have pictures of Pontiac Grand Am cars and I'm changing the pictures but they won't show up does anyone know why its doing this? It's really pissing me off!!!

I have a full avatar shot, but I also want a closer up image of it too. How do I go about doing this?
