Why do people get allergies?

i have a nut allergy, but only to certain nuts. i have never understood why people get allergic to things

I was just wondering, ever since I have allergies, anyone that smokes near me makes my allergies worse, like the itching and my eyes watering. Is this common with allergies for smoking to bother me?
