Why is my sims 3 running so slow?

So I have had Sims 3 installed and no problems at all until the other day it randomly starting running majorly slow. Will only run for about 10 seconds then crash where time won't be going but the objects in the world still sway as if it is playing. As my sim is asleep atm, it has taken me hours just to get past midnight. It is becoming impossible to play. More annoyed that it was working perfectly a few days ago. Can anybody help?!
