Why is my web cam black when i sign into messenger?

I would like to be able to sign in via Messenger so that I can use my web cam...it doesn't seem possible to use the cam when the Mail screen is the main interface with Yahoo.

I'm new to the web cam stuff and not real familiar on how to work it. I want it to where when I sign in, it will state "view my web cam" on people's messenger list. And is there a way I can do that just for a few contacts of mine without specifically...
