Why is the sky lighter at night when it is snowing?

Having been trying to get to sleep last night, I found the light bothering me. It was brighter than a normal night with no snow. Pretty, yes, but it got me thinking. My theory is that the white reflects any IR rays are emitted, and then the reflected IR rays reflect off the clouds, too. So what's your theory, or do you actually know why it is brighter? Thank you and enjoy the snow (if you have it)! :) x
