Are there any DVD players that can play data discs?

I want to know this bcoz I want to watch my downloaded avi files using my TV and a portable dvd player (without transcoding avi files to DVD (.vob) that takes hours to finish). Can any1 suggest brands that are reliable?

we have upconversion dvd player that can go up to 1080p, does it mean it will play HD DVD movies in 1080P quality or does it mean it can just play HD DVD movies in regular DVD quality?
