Do all DVDs play in HD?

do i need a hd tv to play hd dvds on the xbox 360 hd dvd player

I'm debating whether to get a blu-ray dvd player, or a HD dvd player.. I know blu-ray dvd players can play special blu-ray discs, but can they also play HD dvds, and regular dvds?

I have a dvd recorder so if I recorded a program on to a dvd in standard definition and play it in the xbox 360 hd dvd player will it be in 1080p HD, if not is there any HD DVD or blu-ray players that will do that

I'm just wondering because if my family gets me a HD-DVD, I wouldn't know until I put it in my DVD player.

I have a Acer Aspire 5738Z and its has a 15.5" HD widescreen and HD-MI output. I was wondering if I could rent blu ray dvds and play them on my laptop and connect it to my 32" HD tv downstairs via HDMI cable.
