How rare are true allergic reactions to mosquito bites?

The bite becomes very inflamed and keeps swelling/spreading until I take antibiotics. Is there anything I can do other than covering up and using mosquito repellant? Or is there something I can do to get rid of this allergy?

I'm aware mosquito bite reactions vary from person to person, but in general, is it possible for me to get bitten (I saw the bites) and then one week later feel the reaction (itchiness and swelling). Thanks in advance. :)
