What is the best way to look for a job? Online applications or Going in and asking them for an application?

I'm a college student and just looking for some spending change. I know when I went to Wal-Mart, they told me to go sit down and do an application at a little computer there that I could have also did at home. When looking for a job at some grocery store, wal-mart/target/k-mart, type of store, etc.....is it best to apply online or go in and ask for an application??? Does it make a difference???
