A good swimming regime to get fitter?

I'm saving up for a gym pass, but I'm completely unfit and have no idea how many lengths is considered good to build up to. So say if I went swimming 3 or 4 times a week, how many lengths should I start out doing, how much should I increase to each time I go, and how much should I ideally build up to, to be moderately fit?
