Why are we allergic to cats?

My husband and I have been together for a while and for as long as he can remember he has always been allergic to cats and I have never had a problem. Then, around the same time recently, he noticed with our kitten he wasn't having reactions anymore...

Alternatively, I wasn't allergic to any dogs until my dog died. Now I'm allergic to all of them.
