Why does my incense smell like smoke when I burn it?

if i smoke a cig or burn while i burning an incense and let it keep burning till it burns out will it dominate the cig or weed smell?

I have young children at home and don't want it to hurt them.

My two friends and I smoke inside my flat but my mom hates it. How do I get the smell out? Should I burn incense sticks or would it make it worse?
