Why do you bite your tongue?

Has it ever happened to anyone else? The pain seems to last a couple of seconds up to the ear on the side of the tongue that has been bitten.

I always wake up to bloody bite marks on my tongue and I have scars all over my tongue. How can I stop from biting my tongue in my sleep? I also have a tongue piercing if that could have something to do with it
