Why doesn't a Nissan truck run smooth in overdrive?

1994 Dodge Dakota just bought it and the overdrive switch doesnt do anything if you push it but you can clearly tell the truck is running in overdrive off... I would love to take this truck down the hwy and not kill the engine or tranny so please do...
